It is precisely because we first possess the capacity for happiness that we are able to enjoy it at any time. It is not a matter of first chasing after the happiness we might one day attain; for if we lack the ability to savour the joy of the present moment, even if we reach what we consider to be the finish line, we will be unable to truly enjoy that happiness.

Happiness is not a reward at the finish line, but a way of moving forward.

It is often said that the great way is simple. But if this ‘simplicity’ were an incredibly simple reality, would you still choose to believe in it?

The purpose of our lives is simply to find contentment and joy, to live a quiet, unassuming life, without seeking excessive material comforts. Rather than calling it a ‘purpose’, it is simply what we ought to strive for: not the pursuit of a career, nor of achievement or status, nor even of love. These are merely by-products; we do not live for them. The key lies in living each day in peace and joy.

Yet to find contentment and joy is, in itself, such a difficult thing to achieve.

They used to say there was a sparkle in my eyes, but why does it seem to have faded away? Am I chasing my dreams, or am I simply being worn down by them?

No one can help you change unless you take action yourself.

No one can really help you unless you let them.

I’ve always felt that letters are the best way to convey one’s feelings; the things we can’t usually say aloud seem to find their rightful place only when written down. The emotions, tone and energy of the moment can all be conveyed to the recipient through the written word.

Speaking of which, it's been a long time since I've written a letter.

I often find myself thinking—if I could live in a small town, with a craft that’s enough to support myself. Maybe I wouldn’t know many people, but there would be one or two neighbours I could talk to. Going out for a walk now and then… how lovely that would be.

To be honest, I really admire Kyoko.

The journey of pursuing one’s ‘dreams’ is long and arduous. Yet today, most people still do not know what their ‘dreams’ are; without a goal—or rather, a destination—how can one even begin to pursue them?

It is said to be long because a ‘dream’ is boundless; it is merely a direction, like a compass, which can only point the way but cannot truly lead you to the finish line. It is said to be arduous because along the way you will encounter all manner of events and people; you will stumble, you will weep, you will rejoice, and you will leap for joy; When you climb over a small hill, it brings a refreshing experience and boundless joy; when you step into a stream, fear may arise because the path ahead is unclear, but once you’ve crossed that stretch, everything will be different, and you’ll be glad of your own courage.

What exactly is happiness?

Perhaps it is simply watching you in silence,

observing your every movement;

Perhaps it is sitting by your side,

listening quietly to your gentle snoring;

Perhaps it is breathing in unison with you,

sharing the moment,

feeling your presence.

Contentment, ease.
