Don’t let ‘critical parents’ dictate your life! Why do you sometimes find yourself behaving exactly like your parents?

The parental self stems from the rules and values internalised during childhood and may manifest as affection or criticism; the child self reflects our emotions, instincts and creativity, and can be both innocent and joyful, yet also rebellious or fearful; the adult self is responsible for rational analysis, helping us to make objective decisions. Learning to recognise and adapt these three states in different situations can improve our interpersonal relationships and enable us to interact with the world in a more mature and confident manner.
