The autonomic nervous system (ANS), also known as the vegetative nervous system (VNS), is the nervous system that controls and regulates the body’s autonomic (unconscious) functions. It is part of the human body and is responsible for maintaining many basic physiological functions, such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, metabolism and thermoregulation.
The autonomic nervous system comprises three main branches: the sympathetic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system and the enteric nervous system.
As the enteric nervous system is subject to less regulation by the central nervous system, it is sometimes considered a separate nervous system in its own right. In this episode, we will focus primarily on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems; I will produce a separate video to introduce the enteric nervous system to you.
The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) is the excitatory branch of the autonomic nervous system and is often referred to as the ‘stress’ or ‘fight-or-flight’ response system. When our bodies are in a state of tension, excitement, emergency or stress, the sympathetic nervous system is activated. By releasing adrenaline (also known as epinephrine) and noradrenaline, it triggers a series of physiological changes to help us cope with the situation at hand.
The following are some common physiological responses:
Cardiovascular regulation: The regulation of the heart causes the heart rate to increase and, by enhancing the heart’s contractile force, boosts the capacity to supply blood. Furthermore, the sympathetic nervous system causes blood vessels to constrict, leading to a rise in blood pressure.
Respiratory regulation: It causes breathing to become faster and deeper, increasing oxygen intake to meet the body’s demands during a state of stress.
Metabolic regulation: It promotes the breakdown of fat and the release of glucose, thereby increasing the energy supply to support the body’s response to stress.
Pupillary dilation: Activation of the sympathetic nervous system causes the pupils to dilate, enhancing visual acuity.
Digestive system regulation: Its effect on the digestive system is primarily to slow gastrointestinal motility and inhibit digestive and absorptive functions, allowing energy and resources to be channelled towards other priorities.

It forms a balance with the parasympathetic nervous system, ensuring the body maintains stable and adaptive functions in different situations.
The parasympathetic nervous system is the calming branch of the autonomic nervous system and is also known as the ‘rest and digest’ system. It is primarily responsible for regulating the body’s state of calm and promoting rest and digestive functions. The parasympathetic nervous system is also known as the vagus nerve.
The following are some of the main functions of the parasympathetic nervous system:
Rest and digestion: It plays a dominant role when the body is in a quiet, relaxed and resting state. It promotes gastrointestinal peristalsis and increases the secretion of digestive juices, facilitating the digestion and absorption of food.
Regulation of the cardiovascular system: Its regulatory effect on the heart slows the heart rate and reduces cardiac contractility, thereby lowering heart rate and blood pressure to maintain stability in the cardiovascular system.
Regulation of the respiratory system: It causes breathing to become slower and shallower, bringing respiration into line with the state of rest.
Metabolic regulation: It helps restore the body’s energy balance, promotes energy storage and maintains normal metabolism.
Pupillary constriction: Activation of the parasympathetic nervous system causes the pupils to constrict, adjusting vision to suit close-up tasks.
Promotion of sleep: Activity of the parasympathetic nervous system helps to promote relaxation and facilitate the onset of sleep.
The parasympathetic nervous system works in balance with the sympathetic nervous system to ensure the body remains stable and adaptable in different situations. Regulating this balance is vital for maintaining the body’s overall health and equilibrium. Activity in the parasympathetic nervous system helps to reduce the body’s stress response, promotes recovery and repair, and maintains the normal functioning of the body’s various systems.
The autonomic nervous system plays a vital role in daily life, helping us to regulate the functions of various bodily systems and adapt to different environments and demands. However, due to various factors such as stress, anxiety and unhealthy lifestyles, the balance of the autonomic nervous system may be disrupted, leading to numerous health issues. When the autonomic nervous system is disrupted, the body may exhibit a variety of manifestations and symptoms, depending on which part of the system is affected.

Metabolic regulation: changes in appetite, weight fluctuations, unstable blood sugar control.
Autonomic Dysfunction Syndrome: symptoms include orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure upon standing), orthostatic syncope, hyperhidrosis and vasovagal syncope.
Sleep problems: difficulty falling asleep, shallow sleep, frequent awakenings or excessive sleep.
Emotional and psychological aspects: anxiety, depression, mood swings, difficulty concentrating and fatigue.

So, what can we do to maintain this balance?
A healthy lifestyle: Maintain a regular sleep-wake cycle, ensure adequate sleep, follow a balanced diet and drink an appropriate amount of water. Avoid excessive fatigue and stress, and engage in moderate physical exercise.
Relaxation and stress management: Learn stress management techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga or other relaxation exercises. Find relaxing activities you enjoy, such as reading, going for a walk or listening to music, to relieve physical and mental stress.
Managing Emotions: Learn to manage your emotions effectively and cope with negative feelings. Find emotional regulation methods that suit you, such as talking to friends and family, keeping a diary, or seeking professional help.
Regular Exercise: Moderate physical activity helps regulate autonomic nervous system function. Choose a form of exercise that suits you, such as walking, running, swimming or yoga, and commit to doing it several times a week.
Social Support: Build strong social relationships and a support network; stay in touch with family and friends, share your feelings and concerns, and seek emotional support.
Reduce Stimulants: Avoid over-reliance on caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and other stimulants. These substances may have a negative impact on the autonomic nervous system.
